Visa cards at the cashier

A card is the most asymmetric channel in the whole cashier. Going in it is instantaneous; coming back it is the slowest mainstream rail there is. Understanding why requires separating two things that look identical on a statement — authorisation and settlement. General timings are on the payments overview.

Authorisation is not payment

When a card deposit is confirmed, the issuer places a hold on the amount and answers yes within a second. That answer is what lets the cashier credit the balance immediately. The actual movement of money happens later, when the transaction settles in a batch between the acquirer and the issuer. Nothing about that delay is visible to the player, which is why cards feel instant even though the underlying transfer is not.

Why a card withdrawal comes back so slowly

A payout to a card is not a transfer. It travels as a refund against the original transaction, moving from the operator through the acquirer to the card scheme, then to the issuer, and finally onto the statement — four handovers, each with its own batch cycle. Two to five banking days is the honest expectation, and a weekend or a public holiday in the middle pushes it further. Nothing at the operator's end can compress this; the queue simply is not theirs.

Reading the statement while you wait

A refund frequently appears first as a pending line and only later as a posted one, sometimes dated back to the original transaction. That backdating confuses people into thinking money never arrived, when in fact it landed under an older date. The reliable check is the available balance rather than the transaction list, and the reference number from the cashier is what the issuer's support will ask for.

When a card withdrawal is the wrong exit

If the card used to deposit has expired or been reissued with a new number, the refund route no longer exists and another channel must be attached to the account. The same applies to prepaid cards that cannot receive refunds at all. Anyone who cares mainly about payout speed is better served by a bank link or a wallet; the card is the convenient way in, rarely the fast way out.

One practical caution

Card spending is easy to lose track of precisely because it is frictionless. Deposit limits set in the account are the countermeasure that actually works, and they apply across every channel at once rather than to the card alone. How they behave — instantly downward, slowly upward — is described on the account opening page.
